The early weeks of dating are exciting, and that excitement can make it hard to see clearly. "Red flags" are warning signs that someone may not be good for you. "Green flags" are signs of a healthy, respectful partner. No one is perfect, so the goal isn't to find someone flawless. It's to notice patterns early, before you're deeply invested.
Communication
🟢 Green flags
- They reply in a reasonable time and tell you if they'll be busy.
- They ask questions about you and remember the answers.
- They can disagree without insults or sulking.
- They say what they mean, instead of hinting and expecting you to guess.
🔴 Red flags
- Hot and cold: intense attention, then days of silence, again and again.
- They turn every conversation back to themselves.
- They give you the silent treatment to punish you.
- They mock you, even "as a joke", and call you sensitive when you object.
Respect and boundaries
🟢 Green flags
- They accept "no" the first time, whether it's about a plan, a photo or physical touch.
- They respect your faith, values and family, even if theirs are different.
- They're happy for you to spend time with friends.
- They're kind to waiters, Grab drivers and strangers, not just to you.
🔴 Red flags
- They pressure you after you've said no, or make you feel guilty.
- They want to check your phone or know where you are at all times.
- They try to cut you off from friends or family.
- They're rude to service staff, or talk badly about everyone in their past.
Consistency and honesty
🟢 Green flags
- Their actions match their words. If they say they'll call, they call.
- They're open about their life: work, friends, where they live.
- They're happy to meet in person and video call.
- They admit mistakes and apologise without excuses.
🔴 Red flags
- Stories that don't add up, or details that keep changing.
- They keep cancelling plans or avoiding meeting in person.
- They hide you from their friends or social media for no clear reason.
- They never take responsibility. Everything is always someone else's fault.
Pace and intensity
A big one in online dating. A green flag is someone who's clearly interested but lets the relationship grow naturally. A red flag is "love bombing": constant compliments, gifts and talk of forever within days, which can feel amazing but is sometimes used to lower your guard. If someone you've never met says they've found their soulmate, take a step back.
Money
Money conversations can be awkward, but they reveal a lot.
- Green: they're reasonable about splitting costs or taking turns, and they don't make you feel judged about your budget.
- Red: they ask to borrow money early, push you into an investment or crypto opportunity, or always have an emergency only you can fix.
That last group of red flags is also how many love scams work. If you notice them, read how to spot a dating scammer, which includes official Malaysian advice on what to do.
Your own feelings are data too
Sometimes the clearest sign isn't anything they say, it's how you feel. Ask yourself:
- Do I feel calm and like myself around them, or anxious and on edge?
- Am I making excuses for them to my friends?
- Do I feel more confident since we met, or less?
Feeling nervous before a date is normal. Feeling afraid of someone's reaction is not.
Quick checklist
- Do they respect my "no"?
- Do their actions match their words?
- Have we met in person, in a public place?
- Are they open about their life and happy to meet my friends?
- Have they never asked me for money or banking details?
- Can we disagree without it becoming a fight?
- Do I feel safe and like myself with them?
Mostly yes? That's a great sign. A few no's? It doesn't automatically mean the end, but talk about it, and trust what you see over time.
When to get help
